Rafting stretches are about 5 km for many providers, sometimes it may be up to 6.5 km. Duration on water is usually 1 – 2 hrs, it really depends on the water level and the weather. Usually recommend going there for months, roughly May to December. Because the water levels are good and not very dangerous. April can have lower water levels in some stretches. Heavy rains can make water rafting unsafe.

Zip lining in Ella (Flying Ravana)

Flying Ravana is another famous adventurous activity among both locals and foreigners. It’s located in Ella, in the hill country of Sri Lanka. The Flying Ravana Mega Zipline is about 550 meters long and stretches across valleys and tea plantations. Speed can reach up to 80 km/h, making it one of the fastest in Asia. You can best enjoy it on clear days. All equipment is provided, like a safety harness and helmet. Most suitable for healthy adults and older children, usually above 6 years old or minimum weight 30 kg.Not recommended for people with heart problems, severe vertigo, or pregnancy. The actual ride takes less than 1 minute, but the entire process takes 30 – 45 minutes. You can go solo or in tandem. This is the most recommended activity for young couples and travelers because this is an unforgettable experience.

Trekking and Hiking (Adam’s Peak & Hill Country Trails)

Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada) is a sacred mountain (2,243 m) in the central highlands near Hatton. This mountain is famous for the “sacred footprint” at the summit and its sunrise view. Other popular hikes are Ella Rock, Little Adam’s Peak, Knuckles Range, and Horton Plains (World’s End).Adam’s peak season is from December to May, because it’s the pilgrimage season. Off-season is very quiet but risky due to slippery conditions and heavy mist. Other hikes don’t have any specific season to go, but the recommended season is December to April, because that’s the dry season. Adam’s Peak climb is 5000+ steps; it takes 2.5 – 4 hours one way. Anyone with reasonable fitness can attempt it, but it’s tiring. Other hikes are suitable for beginners too. Knuckles Range is more challenging and recommended with a guide. Hot Air Ballooning (Dambulla/Sigiriya Region)

The main ballooning hub is the cultural triangle. That cultural triangle is the Dambulla, Sigiriya, and Kandalama areas. Flights float above jungles, lakes, and villages and give aerial views of Sigiriya Rock Fortress and the surrounding landscape.The best season to go is from November to April. Early mornings are ideal because flights usually take off around 5.30 am – 6.00 am for sunrise.There are no doubts about safety because it is run by licensed, experienced pilots with international safety standards. Children above 7 years can usually join, but it is not recommended for pregnant women and people with recent surgeries or serious heart conditions.The whole experience lasts 3 – 4 hours, including hotel pickup, safety briefing, inflation of the balloon, flight, and landing. Actual flight time is 45 minutes – 1 hour. This is a peaceful ride with stunning sunrise views and wild elephants sometimes visible below.

Water-Based Sports in Sri Lanka

Surfing is one of the most famous and popular water-based sports in the south and East of Sri Lanka.The most famous surfing areas are Weligama, Mirissa, Hikkaduwa, and Arugum Bay.Weligama is best for beginners because of the gentle waves and surf schools. Snorkeling and diving can be experienced in both Trincomalee and Down South.Pigeon Island in Trincomalee is offering to watch beautiful coral reefs, turtles, and reef sharks. You can enjoy watching colorful fishes and reefs in Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa. Don’t worry about safety, operators provide safety gear and guides, but you should have basic swimming skills.One snorkeling trip can be 1 – 2 hours, and diving 45 minutes per dive.

Mirissa and Kalpitiya are the world-famous whale and dolphin watching spots in Sri Lanka. If you visit Mirissa in any month between December and April, you can see blue whales, sperm whales, and dolphins. If any month between November and April, you guys can enjoy watching dolphins in large pods. Whale watching tours are around 3-5 hours. Whale-watching boats also follow safety regulations, but those prone to seasickness should bring medication.
